The genus Eleocharis of Renfrew County:
A comparative study

By Grant A. Bickel, 2020

Eleocharis elliptica Kunth, Elliptic spikerush

Eleocharis elliptica is sparse in Renfrew County. It is found frequently in fens and calcareous wetlands, but also on beaches along the Ottawa River. It is easily identified by the distinctively decorated golden yellow achenes that persist after the scales are shed (Figure 2). Eleocharis elliptica is quite variable and can be difficult to separate from Eleocharis compressa. A thorough study of several Renfrew County populations suggests that our specimens should all be attributed to Eleocharis elliptica. See that discussion here: Eleocharis elliptica study.
