Schoenoplectus tabernaemontani (C.C. Gmelin) Palla, Soft-stemmed bulrush

Schoenoplectus tabernaemontani is common in Renfrew County, found in shallow water of lakes and ponds. The common name is quite apt for the soft stems that are easily crushed between your fingers. Accordingly, Hard-stemmed bulrush, Schoenoplectus acutus, has much tougher stems as evidenced by the cellular structure of the stem cross section (Figure 5).
