Section BICOLORES
Only one species from Section BICOLORES is found in Renfrew County.
Carex aurea Nutt., Golden Sedge
The name aurea refers to the golden color of the ripe perigynia. Carex aurea is uncommon in Renfrew County and found in calcareous wetlands. In the field, the spherical smooth perigiynia are unmistakable, looking like tiny golden berries. These peryginia are quite fleshy and actually resemble tiny apricot fruits (Figure 2). Perhaps, when ripe, these succulent and slightly sweet peryginia are attractants to animals for seed dispersal.
