The genus Carex of Renfrew County:
A comparative study

By Grant A. Bickel, 2020

Carex laxiflora Lam., Loose-flowered Sedge (Section LAXIFLORAE)

Carex laxiflora is rare in Renfrew County. It is found in rich upland woods and distinguished by predominant basal leaves and lax culms (Figure 3).

Carex laxiflora is often confused with Carex albursina. The basal leaves of C. laxiflora are usually less than 1 cm in width but often wider (as in Figure 3). A better way to separate these two species is by comparing the pistillate scales; C. laxiflora has long awned scales whereas C. albursina has broadly obtuse scales, scarcely toothed at apex. I have found no verified records of Carex albursina from Renfrew County.
