Only one species comprises Section LEPTOCEPHALAE.

Carex leptalea Wahl., Bristle-stalked Sedge

The name leptalea refers to the slender weak stems. The stems are topped with an indistinct inflorescence made up of a few peryginia and terminal staminate scales. It is widespread and common in Renfrew County found in shaded wet woods, fens and meadows.
