Only one species from Section PHYLLOSTACHYAE is found in Renfrew County.

Carex backii Boott, Back's Sedge

Carex backii is an upland species of dry rocky slopes and is sparse in Renfrew County. Carex backii is distinctive with its leaf-like pistillate scales concealing the perigynia.

Habit of Carex backii

Figure 3. Habit. Overwintering leaves are laying flat beneath the new upright growth that will replace them. The slender drooping culms are distinctive; terminated with the long pistillate scales of the inflorescence.
