Carex michauxiana Boeckl., Michaux’s Sedge (Section ROSTRALES)
Carex michauxiana is rare in Renfrew County and found on emergent shorelines. It has been very difficult to find and I have been unable to confirm this species from any of the previous collection sites despite significant searches. The site for the 1949 herbarium record no longer exists as it was flooded when the Swisha dam was constructed. The sites from the Mary Moore records are a bit vague and I have searched areas in their vicinity for this species but without luck. I also visited the exact site of the 1989 Brunton record and found no living plants. This suggests that these populations are not long lived. The only site at which I have observed this species contained a very small population, about five clumps, and these were isolated to a 10 x 10 meter area in an otherwise large wetland with equally suitable habitat.
