Section HOLARRHENAE

Only one species from Section HOLARRHENAE is found in Renfrew County.

Carex sartwellii Dew., Sartwell’s Sedge

Carex sartwellii grows as dense colonies in alvars and calcareous wet meadows. It is rare in Renfrew County with only two herbarium records from the south east end of the county (Ashdad and Claybank). It can be confused with Carex praegracilis, a non-native species slowly moving into Renfrew County, but Carex sartwellii has androgynous spikelets while Carex praegracilis has unisexual infloresences.
