The genus Carex of Renfrew County:
A comparative study

By Grant A. Bickel, 2020

Section PALUDOSAE

Section PALUDOSAE is represented by four species in Renfrew County. The Section PALUDOSAE is in need of revision [http://floranorthamerica.org/] but for the four Renfrew County species, the feature that distinguishes these from other sections (within Carex subgenus Carex) is their perigynia with widely separated bidentate beaks (Figure 1). Three of these species also have heavily pubescent perigynia. In two cases, the appearance of the perigynia has led to nomenclature describing their woolly or animal pelt nature; lasio- means "woolly" and pellis means "pelt".
