Section RACEMOSAE
Only one species from Section RACEMOSAE is found in Renfrew County.
Carex buxbaumii Wahl., Buxbaum’s Sedge
Carex buxbaumii is found in calcareous wetlands and is rare in Renfrew County. Carex buxbaumii is very distinctive with its dark brown scales contrasting with the light green perigynia. At one site in southern Renfrew County, all plants sampled showed about two thirds of the Carex buxbaumii achenes were being eaten by a tiny orange larvae (gall midge of the family Cecidomyiidae). The same larvae were also infesting the neighboring Carex lasiocarpa achenes and very similar larvae have been found at other Renfrew County locations in the achenes of Dulichium arundinaceum.
